Sell, sell, sell

We see thousands of adverts every day – in the street, on television, in supermarkets and in newspapers and magazines. Each advert tells us how wonderful a product is. The company wants us to remember the product and buy it.

One way of getting people to remember a product is to use

famous people. Celebrities are used to sell expensive goods because companies want us to link the products with success and beauty. These adverts are cafeful to tell us that buying a shampoo advertised by a famous actress, or wearing the trainers worn by a successful sportsman, will make us beautiful and successful, too. Adverts that use celebrities can cost a lot of money, but people are persuaded to buy the product. Sometimes they spend a lot of money on luxury goods they can't afford..

Another way to promote products is to make

unusual adverts. In some parts of the USA adverts are printed on beaches by special trucks. This way of advertising is very popular with companies. Why?

Because it’s impossible to ignore an ad you have to sit on! On busy beaches the adverts are destroyed by midday so the same advert is made again every morning. Another unusual form of advertising uses peoples faces. It’s an easy way for people to earn money and very popular with students. Colourful company logos and product names are painted on students’ faces by an advertising agency. The students

are paid to walk around with the advert for a week. It’s

a cheap way for companies to get their message across.

If you don’t believe that you are influenced by advertisements, even ones you don’t like, you’re wrong. Adverts aren’t successful if they are liked, they are successful if they are remembered. They could make us laugh or they could make us angry, but as long as people buy the product, it’s a good ad. We may not like the adverts we see, but they work!

6.Read the text, and say where and why a SWOT analysis is used.

Have you done your SWOT analysis?

A SWOT analysis is an analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.

This technique is often used in companies to evaluate internal and external factors that influence their development, and to plan for the future.

It can be used to solve a problem, to look at a problem from different angles, and then make a decision. Anybody can use this technique to assess any situation.

A personal SWOT analysis means analysing your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats within the chosen area, such as your job. ‘Strengths’ and ‘weaknesses' refer to your internal capacity, your personal qualities, abilities, knowledge and experience. For example, one of your strengths might be that you can make decisions quickly. A weakness might be that you don't always think of the possible consequences of your decision. ‘Opportunities' and ‘threats’ refer to the external environment. For example, an opportunity might be that the job you have chosen is in great demand in your region.

A threat, that you don't have the necessary qualifications now, and the work situation may have changed by the time you finally get them. A SWOT analysis helps you understand all aspects of a problem better, and to make a decision or an action plan.

• What is e-commerce?

A revolution has taken place in the last few years in retailing and business. Many companies are now seizing the opportunity that the internet provides in selling, and advertising goods and services. Usually this involves having a website which allows customers to find goods or services they desire and then pay for them - the product or service then arrives on their doorstep a few days later.

More and more people are leaving high street shops to buy things on the internet - this home shopping is essentially e-commerce.

E-commerce sites mostly work in the same way: customers search through lists and descriptions of products; they add items that they want to their 'shopping basket'; they can remove unwanted items from their basket at any time; when they want to confirm their order, they click on a 'checkout' button; they must then enter their credit card details to pay for their goods. The goods are then (hopefully) delivered, although the customer will have to wait several days, or even longer, for the goods to arrive.

The practice has become much more widespread since many security issues have been resolved. E-commerce transactions can be divided now into three types: business-to-business, business-to-consumer and consumer-to-consumer. An example of the latter would be online auctions.
